No te lo puedo explicar porque no vas a entender” *

(I can’t explain it to you because you won’t understand)

Argentina’s road to victory in the 2022 World Cup brought us images of millions around the world singing and chanting these exact words about the incomprehensible passion for their country. While it may be difficult to explain, here are some thoughts on the origins of this fiery spirit.

The people of Argentina are known for their passion and intense emotions, and this characteristic is woven into the fabric of the country's culture and history. There are a number of factors that contribute to the passionate nature of the Argentine people. While this feature may be deeply rooted in the country's past, it remains evident in everything from their love of soccer (¡fútbol!) and tango to their political and social activism.

Historical background

One reason for this passion is the country's tumultuous history. Argentina has gone through many periods of upheaval, including economic crises, military dictatorships, and social unrest. This has resulted in a culture that values self-expression and the ability to speak out against injustice. Argentinians are not afraid to speak their minds and stand up for what they believe in, and this passion is often seen in their participation in protests and political demonstrations.

Family & community ties

Another factor that contributes to the passion of Argentinians is the country's strong sense of community and family. Argentinians value relationships and are known for their close-knit families and strong friendships. This sense of community and connection to others can also be seen in the country's vibrant cultural scene, with its lively music, dance, and art scenes.

Pride in heritage & traditions

Finally, the country's unique blend of European and Latin American influences has also shaped its culture and contributed to the passion of its people. Argentina has a rich and diverse cultural heritage, with influences from Spain, Italy, and other European countries, as well as from the indigenous people of the region. This mix of cultures has created a special blend of traditions and values that contribute to the vibrant and expressive culture of Argentina. This distinctive mix has given many Argentine people a strong sense of their national identity and passion for their country. This pride is evident in the way that the Argentine people celebrate their national holidays and maintain daily traditions. From the annual celebration of Independence Day or their daily maté-drinking ritual or World Cup appearances and victories, the people of Argentina are not shy about expressing their love for their country.

My first experience of this pride was when I landed in Buenos Aires in the early weeks of the 2018 World Cup that had me quickly chanting along with the crowds “Vamos Argentina, sabés que yo te quiero(Let’s go, Argentina, you know I love you). Indeed, hard to explain this energy, but easy to catch on to such contagious enthusiasm.

Overall, the passion of Argentinians is a reflection of their country's rich history, strong sense of community, and diverse cultural influences. This fiery spirit stems from the country's history of political and social upheaval, rich cultural heritage, and pride in their national identity. Whether they are protesting, dancing the tango, celebrating traditions, or their national selection football team, the Argentine people are not afraid to let their emotions show. It is an integral part of its people’s identity and can be seen in every aspect of Argentine life.

So even though millions of Argentinians claim that it can’t be explained #NoLoEntenderías, I hope this gives you some insight into the cultural phenomenon that is Argentine passion.
